Today's prompt from Kat McNally:

In her seminal book Bird by Bird, Anne Lamott offers the observation: "The evidence is in, and you are the verdict."

Regardless of where you live in this crazy beautiful world, I'm sure you'll agree it's been a BIG year.

Today, I want to acknowledge that you are here and I am here and we are here.

We're just... HERE.

That feels like a BIG DEAL.

And, that being said, I invite you to reflect on all that this evinces. What are you the verdict of?

I confess that the word "verdict" makes me recoil, even knowing this context. So let us call it something else here in my space: a concluding? a choosing? a becoming?

It says something about me that it's all gerunds coming to mind, ja?

Being here is a big deal. The Hebrew words in the subject line are from the Shehechianu, a prayer said on the first night of Hanukkah and on other happy occasions (and provides the title and beginning of the final poem in my book, because yes, my theology in six words could well be boiled down to "Holy cow, we are here! Praise").

And earlier tonight I listed to a harpist play another Hanukkah blessing on public radio while I chopped green peppers and onions. The dog gleefully hoovered up bits of green pepper, and the BYM charged out of his study to holler at the radio hosts for being so damn slow at arithmetic. (Like other engineers I know, he is low on patience and high in entertainment value.)

I have a glass of Pacific Coast Pinot Grigio cider at hand. The Titans won this afternoon. The New York Times database has a recipe for Marcus Samuelsson's garam masala pumpkin tart. I have work I must plow through before I go to bed, but I can slice at it while wearing fleecy pj bottoms with polar bears and spruce trees on them.

I am the becoming and the witnessing of a passion for order forever sharing the proverbial seesaw-qua-scales with the drive to move things along. Which is why I'm a kickass copyeditor on the clock, but also why my non-business-related receipts from July and August were in an arboretum gift bag until a few minutes ago, and are now in a laundry basket next to the shredder, and also why bits of my holiday paraphenalia are currently occupying six different surfaces in the house (the chocolate needs to be out of range of both the dog and the heating grates, some of the cards are near the stamps, some of the other cards are piled with correspondence to be answered...).
