Reverb15 Day 2: What surprised you this year?

There are surprises within every week. I am surprised that I didn't have the mental wherewithal to finish drafting several poems in response to Meghan Tutulo's Purple Night City, given that it was my favorite of Rattle's ekphrastic prompts this year. Some months are like that, and I'm glad the prompt introduced me to Tutulo's work. Still, I'll be happier when the surprises again spring up in the course of writing, rather than the not getting around to writing.

A cozier surprise: a colleague just returned from New Orleans. I knew she'd planned to bring back something for me -- her sense of humor is as questionable as mine, so I'd told her, "Whatever it is, no nylon, please." Still, I wasn't expecting the fluffy lavender shawl.

Winning a Pro Pelican USO contest surprised me. That the final was Vinci vs. Pennetta surprised damn near everyone. Getting to watch Djokovic vs. Bellucci on a Tuesday night in Montreal was a happy bonus (it had been scheduled as the day match; my companion and I had evening tix). Chardy defeating Isner was pretty sweet, too, especially considering the gadjillion match points he saved in the process. Stan Wawrinka winning Roland Garros. Roger Federer's daft yet deft new return tactics.

The US Supreme Court's June decision on marriage equality? Oh very yes. Like Obama's election and re-election, I'd hoped but dared not expect the outcome I wanted. Louisiana just elected a Democrat to be its next governor, and another Democrat to a long-Republican state senate seat. This was especially welcome news (all the more so since a friend worked on both campaigns) after Kentucky's gubernatorial results.

I was surprised to see lamb on sale at my neighborhood Kroger. The BYM happily exclaimed, "Steak frites!" when I served it with fries for dinner. We talked a bit about how our salt and pepper shakers still confuse us, even though we've bee using them for the better part of a decade.

Our conversations, they are all over the place. Just like this entry. Which I am admittedly writing in part because I am working up the energy to get some cards ready to mail. The Kroger has Hanukkah-Christmas cards this year. That, too, rates as a pleasing surprise.
